Birds are not the only creatures that readily use person made houses. Bats, bees, and even butterflies will all use nesting boxes. Bats prefer a longer house with ladders to cling onto. We have a variety of sizes that can accommodate female bats and their pups, as well as single males.
Bat houses in Ontario should be placed facing east so that they'll benefit from the morning sun and they require at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. It is recommended that the top third of the bat house be stained dark brown with a non-toxic stain. Bat houses such as the WBU Single Chamber Bat House need to be at 26°C to 28°C in temperature for females and pups. The majority of bats that use bat houses are females who use them as nurseries. However, a house that is not warm enough for a nursery colony may be right for attracting bachelor male bats. Locate houses near a permanent water source and hang them 15 feet above the ground where they are sheltered from wind. The higher you can hang the house the better. Houses in trees tend to take longer to become occupied than those on poles or buildings. To learn more about our bat houses please read our Bat Habitat Guide.
